Elite Scale, Elite Challenges: Photographing the Worcester County Championships

Stepping onto the deck at the Sandwell Aquatics Centre for my first Worcester County Championships was all about capturing the motion, emotion, and impact of elite swimming in a world-class environment. A venue of this scale is spectacular, but it demands a level of tactical precision far beyond a standard open meet.

The Tactical Split-Second

A 50m Long Course is a different beast. In a 25m pool, the frequent turns give you constant opportunities to reset. At Sandwell, you have to be clinical. Because these are county-level athletes, the speed is relentless. There is zero room for error; you’re making split-second decisions on which swimmer is breaking the surface with the most power, knowing that once they pass your position, that ‘hero shot’ window is closed for the rest of the length.

For the freestyle, there is an added layer of anticipation. You’re hunting for the swimmers breathing toward your side of the deck. There is a specific rush when everything aligns. Right time, right place, and you connect with a swimmer mid-race. In that fleeting moment when they turn to take a breath and look directly toward the lens, the 50m distance disappears. It’s a powerful connection that turns a standard action shot into a true motion and emotion moment.

Bridging the 10-Lane Gap

The sheer scale of a 10-lane pool adds a massive layer of complexity. During the butterfly and breaststroke, I took up a central position at the end of the lanes. This was the only way to stay tactical, positioning myself to sweep the field and capture the symmetry and power of as many athletes as possible as they rose from the water.

However, the distance isn't the only hurdle; it’s the spray. At this level of speed, the water displacement is massive. With nine other lanes churning up the water in the foreground, the constant splashes create a chaotic wall of mist that can easily trick a camera's autofocus. You have to work twice as hard to isolate the subject through the churn, ensuring the gritty impact of their performance isn't lost in the expanse of the pool.

The challenge of a venue like Sandwell isn't about being overwhelmed; it's about the technical satisfaction of getting it right when the stakes and the speeds are higher. From the focused silence on the blocks to the explosion of water at the finish, my goal was to deliver a gallery that reflects the prestige of the County Championships.
